A pickup truck and a semi collided in Santa Maria on Thursday.
It sent the driver of the pickup to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash happened around 10 a.m. on the 700 block of South Blosser Street.
Several blocks of South Blosser were taped off to traffic and onlookers this morning.
"There was a 1998 Dodge that was traveling northbound on the number two lane of Blosser that collided into a tractor trailer that was pulling out of a driveway on the East side of Blosser," said Sergeant Jesus Valle, Santa Maria Police Department.
Firefighters used saws and other tools to help cut the roof off the pickup to rescue John Russell, 57, a local landscaper.
"Was the truck close enough to constitute an immediate hazard? Did the truck driver see the other truck approaching? There are a lot of things we need to look at," said Sergeant Valle.
After more than an hour, Russell was finally pulled out of the crushed truck and was rushed to a helicopter for a ride to a Santa Barbara hospital.
A Santa Maria traffic investigator says it is too soon to know just what caused Russell's pickup to collide with the big rig.
"All we can say at this point is just be aware of your surroundings, be aware of people pulling out of driveways, and be aware of your speeds," said Sergeant Valle.
The crash is still under investigation.
50-year-old Jose Raul Gamez was driving the semi truck.
He had no injuries.
