Santa Maria city leaders are drawing up an action plan to address traffic concerns near Pioneer Valley High School.
Two weeks ago, people living in the area voiced their frustrations with parents dropping off students in the neighborhood next to the school.
For people living in this neighborhood, when the bell sounds, that's their warning sound, transforming a quiet street adjacent to the school, into a busy highway.
"We get a lot of young adults racing down the street," said Katheryn Pirky, a neighborhood resident.
Four years ago, Pioneer Valley was forced to halt their school buses due to budget constraints forcing parents to drop off students.
However, according to Principal Shanda Herrera, there is plenty of space for drop offs on school grounds.
"They can actually drive in go around the roundabout, and we have the ability to have up to 6 to 8 cars drop off their students there consecutively at the same time," said Herrera.
They also have a second drop off area and while many use the designated drop off, many more choose not to.
Neighbors describe seeing parents vying for the best spot by whatever means necessary.
Speed, trash, loitering on lawns, and heavy traffic has become the norm.
"The stop sign here at the end of my street, which is the corner of Domingues and
Synica nobody stops at that stop sign, whether they're turning right or left they just keep going," said Pirky.
Needless to say neighbors want an end to the congestion.
"I think that we need a speed bump on our street; we need no parking on our street during certain hours of the day," said Pirky, "I think that parents need to be more responsible and that the school has an obligation to the children on their way to school and after school."
City leaders say they are looking into a number of solutions and will present those to the community in the coming weeks.
