Pirates edge Braves behind two goals from Chavez

Jackson Chavez scored twice within a five minute period in the second half to deliver a 2-1 Los Padres League victory for the Morro Bay boys soccer team over visiting Lompoc on Thursday.

The Pirates improved to 4-1 in league and 10-4-2 overall under head coach Andrew Wilkie.

The Pirates earned a win before kickoff after winning a protest they filed over a loss to Santa Maria where a Saints player took part in both the varsity and junior varsity games, which is illegal.

Morro Bay squandered several scoring opportunities in the first half, including a penalty kick from Holt Alden that rolled right to the Lompoc keeper.

The Pirates quickly got on the board in the second half when Chavez, a senior co-captain, dribbled inside the box and rolled it by the diving Lompoc goalie in the 45th minute of the match. Just five minutes later, Alden sent a high arcing ball from midfield toward the goal. It bounced over the head of the Lompoc goalie, who ran 15 yards away from the goal to try to corral the ball. The goalie and Chavez sprinted toward the goal and the ball. The two collided and the ball trickled into the goal to make it 2-0 Morro Bay. Chavez was credited with his second goal of the game and 14th of the season. Alden earned the assist.

Lompoc cut the deficit in half a few minutes later, but the Morro Bay defense preserved the win behind goalie Jeremy Neilson.
