PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - Two different accounts of the shooting death of the girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius are coming from South African prosecutors and from Pistorius himself.
At a court hearing today, prosecutors alleged that Pistorius took the time to put on his artificial legs and walk some seven yards from the bed to the bathroom door before opening fire through the door, killing Reeva Steenkamp.
But in a statement read by his lawyer, the track star said he didn't have on his prosthetic legs when he fired, thinking there was an intruder inside.
Then, he says, he realized that Steenkamp was not in his bed. He says "It filled me with horror and fear."
He says he put on his legs, tried to kick down the door, then bashed it in with a cricket bat to find Steenkamp shot inside.
