Police encourage you to have a safe New Year's Eve

As you get ready to celebrate the new year, local police want to make sure your celebration is a safe one.

Drunk drivers are a main concern for police officers everywhere. The Santa Maria Police Department wants to remind you to make safe decisions while drinking alcohol.

"They're looking for those DUIs first and foremost, in addition to responding to the other calls that just happen on a routine basis, perhaps maybe a bit more so tonight with the parties and other things that occur," said Sgt. Russell Mengel.

They also say using guns or other firearms to celebrate the new year is also a concern. Fireworks are not allowed on New Year's Eve in Santa Maria and in most other cities on the Central Coast.
