Police identify driver they say crashed into power pole, caused power outage

Police have identified the driver they say crashed into a power pole and caused a power outage Thursday night.

Arroyo Grande Police say 46-year-old David Skillman, a transient, was driving on El Camino Real toward Cornwall Avenue. Police say he was driving too fast and hit a power pole. The power pole fell to the ground, and downed power lines fell across all lanes of the 101 Freeway in the area, just north of East Grand Avenue.

Traffic in both directions was stopped, and the freeway was shut down for several hours. Traffic was diverted through the City of Arroyo Grande. About 5,000 PG&E customers lost power temporarily.

Investigators say Skillman was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Skillman was the only person in the car. He was not injured during the accident.
