A memorial site in Atascadero dedicated to war veterans was reported to be vandalized on Wednesday morning. The Atascadero Police Department said it is on the hunt for a suspect, and they said they need the community's help. Police said someone drove through the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, destroying nearly $15,000 worth of property. The memorial site is on the corner of Portola Road and Morro Road.
Sergeant Jason Carr said they don't believe the incident is a drunk driving situation. They believe whoever drove through the memorial site did it intentionally. He said the driver damaged benches and lighting fixtures. Tire marks could still be seen on the ground on Wednesday evening.
"It's gonna appear to be an intentional act. I have no idea what would prompt that act at this point, but like I said, the investigation will continue," said Carr.
Police said a witness reported a mid-1980s red Chevrolet pickup truck drive through the site on Wednesday morning. By the time police arrived to the scene around 10:05am, the truck was no where to be found.
Carr said, "As you're hearing the radio traffic and the officers responding and you're hearing what the damage was, kinda trying to figure out okay, what would have possessed somebody to do something like that?"
Carr said the driver could face a charge of felony vandalism. He said the truck would have obvious damage on both sides, and they also believe the truck has a diamond plated tool box in the bed and some kind of rack. Police said the memorial has never been vandalized before. It was dedicated at that site in Atascadero in 2008.
Investigators urge anyone who has information on this case to contact police.
