Police make arrest in rape case nearly one year later, thanks to DNA

Santa Barbara Police say DNA helped track down a suspect in a rape case.

Officers arrested Peter Parra, 35, on May 14th. He faces a charge of rape involving a victim too intoxicated to resist.

The incident happened on June 8, 2012. Police say a UCSB college student, who had been drinking heavily, was waiting outside a nightclub for a ride home when Parra approached her and took her to a nearby car.

Police say another man drove the two to Parra's home where the woman was raped. She was then driven to Isla Vista, where she walked home and later went to the hospital.

Police collected DNA from the victim, but found no match until they were contacted by the California Department of Justice in April, which matched the DNA to Parra.

Police say Parra admitted to having sex with the victim, but claims it was consensual.
