It's called Community Watch Santa Maria 2010. The program is the brainchild of Dr. Warren Gabaree of Santa Maria. He says community members must help the police to tackle youth violence and crime problems throughout the city.
Gabaree says the community watch program would be a joint effort with the Santa Maria Police Department and involve faith based organizations in unison with other community groups to assist the police department in the reporting, combating, and ultimate reduction of crime in the community.
Gabaree has drafted a flyer that would be distributed through the city and at community meetings. It explains how the public can report crime and proposes ideas to fight youth gang violence.
Gabaree and the police department will give a presentation on the program at tonight's city council meeting.
KSBY's Ariel Wesler will have details on the program tonight at 5 and 6.
