Police say local gang member tries to rob Santa Maria liquor store with baseball bat

A Santa Maria man is now in jail and recovering from injuries after Santa Maria Police say he attempted to rob a liquor store last night.

Police say 21 year-old, Aldo Gonzalez, tried to rob Maguey Liquor on the 400 block of W. Main St. just before 10:30 on Saturday. They say he had a small wooden baseball bat he used to charge into the store and demand money from the two clerks.

Authorities say Gonzalez reached into the cash register, but clerks grabbed him and a fight broke out. Police say, by the time they arrived, Gonzalez had multiple contusions on his head. There is no information released on injuries to the clerks, at this time.

Santa Maria Police say he was transported to Marian Medical Center, though they say the injuries were not life-threatening.

Gonzalez is now booked in Santa Barbara County Jail on charges for robbery and gang enhancement. Police say they believe he is a member of a local gang.
