Police testify about LA beach auto rampage arrest

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Witnesses told a Los Angeles judge that a man charged with murder in a Venice Beach boardwalk automobile rampage smelled of alcohol when he surrendered later at a police station.

A police officer testified at a preliminary hearing Wednesday that Nathan Campbell told authorities he had downed vodka after the Aug. 3 incident, which claimed the life of an Italian tourist and injured 17 others.

Superior Court Judge Antonio Barretto says he will hear more testimony Wednesday afternoon. Then he plans to adjourn Campbell's case until Jan. 2, when attorneys may make their final arguments.

After that, the judge says he will decide whether Campbell should stand trial on 37 counts, including charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run driving.
