Santa Maria police are warning the public about a scam. They say at least one Santa Maria resident has fallen victim to it.
They say a company called Green Payday Loans solicits customers who are seeking home and personal loans. Potential customers are asked to provide personal information over the internet and are then contacted by telephone. Police say the caller asks the customer to purchase a pre-paid debit card and give the account numbers to the company for payment of anticipated loan fees. Police say the money is later withdrawn from the account, but the customer never receives any service.
Police say they contacted someone at GreenPayday.com, who admitted the process was a scam, but declined to give his location, saying it was in a foreign country.
