The teenage driver who struck and killed a 56-year old woman in Lompoc Friday night is the daughter of a Lompoc policeman. Officers say 18-year-old Lacey Strange is the daughter of Sergeant Chuck Strange. Investigators say she hit 56- year-old Rebecca Vegas, who was crossing the street near the intersection of Ocean Avenue and J Street.
To avoid a conflict of interest, the CHP is helping with the investigation, but would not take over because it's out of their jurisdiction.
"If it were an on-duty emergency vehicle, a police officer involved in a collision on-duty and we were asked to take it, we absolutely would," said Cmdr. Lorraine Krolosky with the Buellton CHP.
KSBY contacted the victim's family. Her brother said he is comfortable with the decision. So far, no charges have been filed.
