Power Reading program hands out awards to local kids

The Guadalupe Summer Academy Power Reading Program held its Awards and Incentive Celebration Thursday.

The Power Reading Initiative reports many students have already moved up grade levels in reading and received their "level up" certificates at the celebration.

All 100 students ranging from grades 4-8 will be honored and have a chance to win prizes such as Wal-Mart giftcards, Charly's Place Gift Cards and backpacks filled with supplies for the upcoming school year.

Power Reading is a United Way program to promote literacy in the community and is offered to schools and for home study students.

According to the United Way more than 50 percent of Santa Barbara County students read below their appropriate grade level. The Power Reading Initiative is hoping to cut that number in half by the year 2020.
