Santa Maria swimmer Josh Prenot returned home from the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials late Monday night asking himself the question, "What if?"
Prenot competed in five events last week at the Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. He reached the semifinals in the 200 meter breaststroke and 200 individual medley, which means he finished in the top 16 in the nation in those two events.
Prenot set personal bests in the events and broke a national age group record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:12.21.
Josh accomplished all that in his first Olympic Trials despite coming down with strep throat a day before his first event. He made the trip with his Santa Maria swim coach Mike Ashmore and teammate Meghan Zimmer, who swam in the 200 freestyle prelims.
"To say we went to basically the fastest swim meet in the world to represent Santa Maria is a big thing," said Prenot. "As far as the times went, I'm just kind of stuck saying what if, like what if I didn't have strep, what could I have accomplished," said Prenot. " I had some successes. I set a national age group record in the 200 breaststroke, I was very happy with that. But I still think I could have been faster. It just gives me more fuel for 2016."
Prenot also wants to make Team USA for next year's World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
This fall, Josh begins his freshman year at Cal, where he'll swim for the two-time defending Golden Bears. He plans to major in physics.
