WASHINGTON (AP) - The prosecution's key witness in the Roger Clemens perjury trial returns to the stand in Washington on Wednesday to face defense cross-examination.
Brian McNamee got a brief taste before court recessed Tuesday. Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin questioned McNamee for 10 minutes. He suggested that McNamee purposely wore a tie with a logo during a grand jury appearance in 2010 to advertise a company for financial gain. McNamee said he has no financial interest in the company, and that he wore the tie because the other one was wrinkled.
The defense is expected to attack McNamee's integrity and motives. In two days of testimony, Clemens' longtime strength coach said he injected the star pitcher with steroids and human growth hormone, and that he once gave Clemens' wife, Debbie, a shot of HGH.
McNamee also described his marital problems, money problems and the legal mess that came about when he got entangled in the federal drugs-in-sports investigation.
The trial is in its fifth week. The tedium cost the proceedings another member of the jury Tuesday. Juror No. 1, a supermarket cashier, became the second member of the panel to be dismissed for falling asleep.
