KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - Officials in the Ukraine's mostly rebel-held region of Donetsk say 34 local residents have been killed and 29 wounded in hostilities in the past 24 hours.
The Donetsk regional administration quoted the death toll as of noon Wednesday in a statement on its website.
Ukrainian troops trying to quell the pro-Russia insurgency in eastern Ukraine are focused on encircling Donetsk, the largest city still in rebel hands.
Several neighborhoods in Donetsk have been hit with artillery fire in the last few days as fighting on the outskirts has intensified.
