Brent McNichols and Grant Brady have been named as the recipients of the Fall 2013 Christopher Meadows Memorial Paramedic Scholarship.
They are both enrolled at the Central Coast Paramedic Program at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
McNichols and Brady were among students from five different counties that applied for the scholarship. The scholarship is worth $3,000. It's given out every year to Central California EMS workers who are pursuing a career as a paramedic.
"Both Brent and Grant showed us their passion for emergency medicine and their compassion for helping others, which are both keys to being a successful paramedic," said Tom Way, an interview committee member and long-time area paramedic.
McNichols has been an EMT at San Luis Ambulance since 2005. He earned his B.A. in marketing from Vanguard University, and he attended Cuesta College in 2008, where he got his EMT certificate. "I'm beyond thankful for this scholarship. Not only is the financial reward important to me, but carrying Chris' legacy forward is a real honor," said McNichols.
Brady graduated from San Diego State University in 2012. He majored in Kinesiology, and he completed his EMT in 2005. He's been working as a reserve firefighter for Morro Bay Fire Department since 2011. "I got my EMT while in high school, and I fell in love with the medical aspect of the job. Earning this award will help me become the best paramedic I can be," said Brady.
The scholarship has been around for four years, and it's been given to seven students. It was established in memory of Christopher Meadows. Meadows was killed in May of 2009, while volunteering at Oceano Dunes for the Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Team. He worked for San Luis Ambulance and had planned to go to paramedic school in the fall of 2009. His co-workers, Taylor and Heather Tucker, started the scholarship. They raise the funds for the scholarships every year at the annual Christopher Meadows Memorial Wine Tasting and Silent Auction. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2014. It goes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pavilion on the Lake in Atascadero. For more information or to make a donation, click here.
