A grand slam in the top of the eighth inning capped a thrilling comeback by the Bakersfield College baseball team in its 15-14 come from behind win at Hancock College Wednesday. The Bulldogs took 7-1 after two innings and 14-7 later in the game.
The pitching staff's collapse overshadowed a big performance at the plate by Bulldogs' second baseman River Stevens. The sophomore from Escondido hit a two-run double into the left-center field gap in the first inning to give 11th ranked Hancock a 2-1 lead over the 19th ranked Renegades. He followed that up with a grand slam over the right field fence to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead in the second inning.
St. Joseph High graduate Jacob Cano added a run-scoring infield single in the bottom of the second to set the stage for the bases-clearing home run.
The Bulldogs improved to 1-2 after splitting their two road games last week to open the season. The Renegades improved to 3-0. Hancock continues its homestand Friday against Canada College at 2pm, followed by a Saturday afternoon game against Porterville College.
