Researchers develop vaccine to temporarily treat HIV

Spanish researchers say they've developed a therapeutic vaccine to temporarily stop the growth of HIV in infected patients.
Scientists at the University of Barcelona tested the vaccine in a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial.
A study published Wednesday in "Science Translational Medicine" said the vaccine temporarily lowered the level of HIV in the blood of infected volunteers for a number of months.
It allowed people on long-term antiretroviral therapy to temporarily live without taking multiple medicines every day.
The vaccine lost its effectiveness over time.
Therapeutic vaccines treat rather than prevent diseases.
The team reportedly hailed the findings as proof such a vaccine might lead to a the control of HIV replication without antiretroviral drugs.
