Researchers say brain cleans up while we're sleeping

New research finds getting a good night's sleep is literally a cleansing experience.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center studied mice to figure out what happens in the brain when we're sleeping.

They injected brain plaque into each mouse. Then, they kept some mice awake and let others sleep. Researchers found the sleeping mice cleared the plaque from their brains faster than the mice that stayed awake.

Researchers also found brain cells shrink during sleep, which makes room for junk to pass through and leave the brain.
