The Warriors battled until the very end, but their furious second half rally fell just short as the Righetti boys soccer team lost to Godinez 3-2 in the second round of the Division 5 CIF playoffs Wednesday night.
The Pac 7 League champion Warriors finished the season 15-9-1.
Godinez's Andrew Soriano scored in the very first minute of the game. He added another in the 11th minute off a throw in to give the visiting -- a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime. Eric Torres scored early in the second half to put Righetti behind 3-0 in the 48th minute. That's when the Warriors got things going offensively.
Emmanuel Zarate sent a header on a spectacular play to the back of the net to put Righetti on the board in the 58th minute. Ten minutes later, Jordan Pollard headed in a corner kick to cut the deficit to one.
A Godinez player received a red card so his team was forced to play the rest of the way with 10 men on the field instead of 11. The Warriors had a few good chances the rest of the way, but could not deliver the equalizer. Sophomore star Jorge Guzman headed a ball that looked like it would tie it with 3:45 to go, but the Grizzlies goalie made a great diving save to deflect it away.
The Warriors will lose eleven seniors to graduation, including captain Francisco Zepeda (7 goals,11 assists) and Gustav Jarpehag (5 goals, 8 assists).
Arroyo Grande lost 1-0 at Tahquitz in Hemet on Wednesday. The Eagles had several scoring opportunities in the match, but could not convert them. Arroyo Grande ended the season 15-10-1 overall. The only goal of the game came in the 15th minute when a Tahquitz player headed in a ball off a throw-in.
Tahquitz, a wild card team that upset the 2nd seed in the first round, improved to 12-8-5 and advanced into the quarterfinals.
The Central Coast went 0-4 in boys soccer second round games. League champions Righetti and Santa Ynez lost home matches. Righetti fell 3-2 to Godinez and Santa Ynez lost 1-0 to La Sierra. Nipomo lost 3-1 at home to Palmdale.
