It was the tale of two halves for the CIF Division 4 title on Saturday at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine. Unfortunately for the Righetti High boys water polo team, the Warriors won the first half, but not the second half. The Warriors lost 11-9 to Los Osos to finish runner-up in CIF.
The Warriors finished the season 26-7 overall, while Los Osos improved to 23-8. The Grizzlies captured their first CIF title since 2008 after knocking out Arroyo Grande in the semifinals and Righetti in the finals.
The Warriors played in their first final since 2006 and were looking for their first CIF championship since 2002.
Righetti, the #1 seed in the division, led 3-1 after the first quarter and 7-4 at the half. However, Los Osos came out attacking in the third quarter and the game was tied 8-8 to open the fourth quarter.
Los Osos took its first lead of the game with 6:42 to play in the game on Jared Strong's third goal of the game. Los Osos scored again to take a 10-8.
Travis Knight scored with 1:25 to play in the game to pull Righetti to within 10-9, but a Grizzlie stole the ball that led to the game-clinching goal for Los Osos with 39 seconds to play.
Devon Tomooka led the Warriors with 3 goals in the loss. Los Osos goalie Brett Dexter registered 14 saves in the cage.
The Warriors beat Los Osos 10-5 earlier this season. But they could close the deal on Saturday.
