SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The campaign for a November ballot initiative that seeks to raise most California income taxes to fund public schools is phasing out a TV ad that criticizes a rival tax initiative pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Spokesman Nathan Ballard said Monday that the Proposition 38 campaign would replace its ad criticizing the governor's initiative, Proposition 30. Brown's plan would increase the state sales tax and boost income taxes for high earners to avoid $6 billion in cuts.
Proposition 38 began airing the ad last week in response to the governor's own campaign commercials. Some of those were misleading by saying that "Sacramento politicians" could not touch the money Brown's initiative would raise.
Brown's campaign says it has no plans to pull its current commercials.
