RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A jury has sided with Riverside County in a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of a Palmdale man who died after an altercation with sheriff's deputies.
The Press-Enterprise reported Wednesday that the Superior Court jury unanimously decided the county was not liable in the 2011 death of 68-year-old Dennis Katz.
Katz's wife and daughter filed suit in 2012. The lawsuit alleged Katz, who is described as "medically and physically handicapped," did nothing wrong but was pepper-sprayed and repeatedly struck.
Sheriff's officials said Katz was belligerent, defied instructions by exiting his car and flung urine from a container at a deputy.
Attorneys for the Katz family did not return phone calls seeking comment.
