Junior slotback Mark Rodgers was named Great West Offensive Player of the Week after an impressive debut in which he rushed for 105-yards and a touchdown on 14-carries. Rodgers also had 2-receptions for 5 yards and a touchdown to go along with a 49-yard kickoff return.
Rodgers, a transfer from West Virginia helped the Mustangs rack up 298-yards rushing and a 23-17 win against Humboldt State on Saturday.
Cal Poly was the lone Great West team to win on the opening weekend of the season. The other four schools all lost to Football Bowl Subdivision opponents on the road. Southern Utah lost 28-20 to Wyoming. North Dakota was blanked by Idaho 45-0. South Dakota lost to Central Florida 38-7 and UC Davis got beat 52-3 at California.
Defensive player of the week honors went to Southern Utah linebacker Akeem Anifowoshe who had 10 tackles. The special teams player of the week was South Dakota punter Cole Zwiefelhofer, who averaged 45.67 yards on six punts, with two pinning UCF inside its own 20-yard line.
