Solvang native Todd Rogers and his partner Phil Dalhausser had no problems with a Czech Republic team winning in straight-sets 21-13 and 21-15 on Thursday. The reigning Beijing Olympic gold medalists improved to 3-0 and won Group B. They will be the #2 overall seed in the Round of 16 that starts on Friday.
Rogers and Dalhausser, who typically are slow starters, surged out to an early lead. The Czech team served to Rogers to avoid the 6'9 Dalhausser from taking swings.
Rogers finished with 13 kills and 7 digs. Dalhausser, who lives in Ventura, recorded 5 blocks and 2 digs. He tallied 11 kills on just 13 swings despite nursing a sore knee.
"Tonight, we definitely played quite a bit better. The sand seemed a little more packed today. Phil and I were essentially just on. We gave up a few foolish points. But we played a pretty solid match," said Rogers after the win.
Thursday was the final day of the preliminary round. The top two teams in each pool advance, with the best third-place teams relegated to a lucky loser round later Thursday.
Rogers and Dalhausser play an Italian team, which is seeded #13, in Friday's Round of 16.
All four American teams won their pools. Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal went 2-1 and advanced. Jen Kessy and April Ross, as well as two-time reigning champions Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor both went 3-0 in pool play.
