In July 2009, Santa Maria native Eric Okerblom was killed by a distracted teenage driver who had been texting while driving.
In memory of Eric, his parents created the Eric Okerblom Foundation.
On Sunday, the foundation hosted "Eric's Run."
The entire community was invited to Orcutt for the event.
Proceeds went directly to the foundation. The goal is to combat distracted driving through education, legislation, and enforcement.
The foundation also aims to provide health care to the uninsured.
Eric's parents expected 200 runners at the event, but nearly 900 showed up.
"I think that the characteristics that Eric embodied are reflected back to me here today, and his kindness and his generosity, that's what I'm experiencing today," said Eilene Okerblom, Eric's mother.
The Foundation is always looking for donations.
