Safe and Sane fireworks on sale Friday; illegal in some communities

The Fourth of July is just one week away, and Safe and Sane fireworks go on-sale in some Central Coast cities Friday.

CAL FIRE on the Central Coast says they are ready to catch people who are using fireworks illegally. The agency says it has increased patrols to find people using illegal fireworks.

Safe and Sane fireworks are those that do not leave the ground. CAL FIRE says a Safe and Sane firework will have a seal from the CA Fire Marshall on the packaging. Any firework without a label is illegal.

Using illegal fireworks can carry a fine of up to $2,000 dollars. If you're caught using a firework that starts a brush fire, CAL FIRE says you could be responsible for all of the fire suppression costs. Those can run up to tens of thousands of dollars.

Safe and Sane fireworks are legal in the following communities of San Luis Obispo County: San Miguel, Templeton, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, and Oceano.

In Santa Barbara County Safe and Sane are legal in Santa Maria and Lompoc.

CAL FIRE encourages people to go to a public fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day.

Here's a list of FREE shows on the Central Coast:

Morro Bay -Tideland Park
Cayucos - Pier
