Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times at the Oceano Dunes. With the big crowds, safety becomes an added concern, especially considering three people have died while riding ATV's at the Dunes this year.
According to Oceano Dunes State Park Rangers there were only four arrests made from Friday night through Labor Day. Rangers say there are usually at least ten arrests during holiday weekends on the Dunes. In addition there were only three minor injuries reported.
The Oceano Dunes is the only California State Park that allows vehicles on the beach. Park Rangers patrol a six-mile stretch of that beach and another 1,500 acres of sand dunes.
