For whatever you want to say, there is probably a greeting card for it. Jennie Foremaster, the owner of The Halcyon Store and Post Office in Halcyon, told KSBY News on Wednesday, anyone can send out an e-card, but a greeting card has a personal touch.
"The fact that it takes the time, you know, the person sending it, took the time to go pick out the card, to write in it, to put a stamp on it, to mail it," said Foremaster.
The Los Angeles Times reported that more than a billion fewer Christmas cards were purchased in 2012 than in 1995, and the rise of the e-card is perhaps to blame.
Though Foremaster said card sales remain strong at her store, Sheri's Hallmark in San Luis Obispo told KSBY on Wednesday that it has noticed a decrease in sales. That same trend hit Papyrus in San Luis Obispo a few years back, as well, according to it's manager.
"Maybe initially, but lately we've seeing an upswing, because people are craving the personal touch," said Papyrus manager Cathy Bague.
Bague said while she understands the appeal of the digital card, she and Foremaster agree, there is simply no substitution for the greeting card.
She said, "Anytime that you go to the mailbox lately, it's either, there are advertisements or a bill. And when you get a card from somebody or just a note saying 'I'm thinking of you', it's a present that you got that day."
