LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police say a graduate student who was shot to death in a struggle with campus police at California State University, San Bernardino, suffered from bipolar disorder for at least 17 years and frequently neglected to take his medication.

San Bernardino city police Sgt. Gary Robertson says Bartholomew Williams' mother told him that Williams had been off his medication for at least a week and had taken it irregularly for two or three months.

Williams was shot in the hallway of his campus housing complex Saturday as campus police tried to handcuff him and take him away for a mental examination. Police say he'd appeared to be irrational earlier in the day but hadn't seemed violent.

Williams was shot after a struggle with three officers that lasted at least eight minutes.
