San Luis Obispo house fire causes more than $350,000 in damage

According to officials with the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department, a house fire in the city Sunday evening caused more than $350,000 in damage.

Battalion Chief Jeff Gater says crews responded to the 4300 block of Vachell Lane around 7:13 p.m.

A deputy with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office arrived first, evacuating the five people inside, and four others from a nearby home.

Gater says when fire crews arrived, the 2,000 square-foot home was on fire, with the 600 square-foot garage, a storage shed, and two vehicles fully involved.

Fire officials say only one of the four bedrooms has significant fire damage, and the nearby home was not damaged.

The fire was under control within 25 minutes of the first 911 call.

Crews from CAL FIRE also responded.

KSBY is told four men in their early 20's lived in the home where the fire started. They have temporary housing through the American Red Cross.

No one was injured, but damage includes the property, home, vehicles, and other contents.

Fire investigators say the fire started in the garage, but the cause is still under investigation

Officials say the home did not have working smoke detectors.
