San Luis Obispo man creates t-shirts based on local landmarks

Phil Hurst, a San Luis Obispo resident and Cal Poly alum, started printing t-shirts in his garage four years ago. He started his own company, "Live, Local Apparel."
Hurst felt passionate about making high-quality clothing that expressed his love for the Central Coast. "There was just no SLO shirts, there weren't any to be had," said Hurst.
Hurst says the process for creating a new shirt starts by making a transparent screen with the design, then pressing the screen onto a blank shirt, coating the screen in paint, and then allowing it to air dry. After that, the shirt goes through an 800 degree dryer. "It will cure the ink, and you have a finished shirt," said Hurst.
You can find almost any local landmark on these shirts, which have gained popularity with both locals and tourists. "It went from a fun hobby to oh this is making money and people are really into it," said Hurst.
You can find the shirts at Boo Boo Records and Dr. Cain's Comics and Games. Hurst also sells his shirts every Thursday night at Farmer's Market. "You will always see someone you know. It's the community. It's local," said Hurst.
Hurst says his next step is to start making designs from other local areas like Avila and Pismo Beach.
