It was a jam packed Garden Room at the Madonna Inn on Wednesday for the "Meet the Candidates" Forum Series put on by the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Dozens of community members in San Luis Obispo listened to candidates for both the city council and the mayoral race.
The three candidates running for mayor are Jan Marx, who currently holds the seat, Steve Barasch, and Donald Hedrick.
Marx has held the mayor seat since 2010 and said she's a booster for the city. She said she cares about it deeply, and she's devoted to serving the public. Marx also added that under her leadership, she was able to balance the city's budget for the first time in four years.
"I am the most qualified, objectively speaking, I've been on the council 8 years, I have background in the law," said Marx.
But, opponent and candidate Steve Barasch said he believes there is still work to be done with the city's budget.
He said, "I'm concerned about the fiscal solvency of the city, and it's long term financial health. I'm concerned about credibility and accountability in the city."
Barasch said he knows business, and he has never missed a payroll in his 38-years of being a business owner.
But, fiscal policies weren't the only issue at the forum.
Candidate Donald Hedrick said he's pleading for more diversity in the city's government.
"Our town has been expressing a very mean spirited approach to solving it's problems, with our homeless and our parking, and that's very disturbing," said Hedrick.
There were different views at the forum, but one common theme- making San Luis Obispo a successful and better place to live.
Election Day is on Tuesday, November 6.
