Last year the San Luis Obispo football team started the season with one point home losses to Garces and Dos Pueblos. This season the Tigers beat both teams by double figures on the road. "Speaks volumes to the kids and what they did in the off-season as far as realizing one of the mantra's of finishing strong. So everything we did in the weight room, everything we did in conditioning was all about finishing" said fifth year head coach David Kelley who's team went 6-5 last season.
San Luis Obispo won with its offense in a 34-21 win at defending CIF champion, Garces. The Tigers racked up 536 total yards of offense in the win. Last Saturday against Dos Pueblos it was the defense carrying the team. San Luis Obispo won 17-0 despite only gaining 264 yards. "Offensively we were always thinking we'd be pretty strong still and defensively we weren't really sure just because we were young and stuff but I think defensively we're doing really good" said junior slotback and safety Nate Greenelsh.
Greenelsh is second on the team with 147 yards rushing but he's only carried the ball 13 times (11.3 yards per carry). Quarterback Thomas Orradre leads the team with 148 yards rushing and he's thrown for 261 yards.
With the Tigers triple-option attack if defenses take one player away there are other options. "If everyone does their job I feel like it's really, really hard to stop, for four quarters at least" said Orradre.
San Luis Obispo plays its home opener on Friday night against 0-1 Oxnard. The Tigers beat the Yellowjackets 21-7 last year in Oxnard. San Luis Obispo plays Morro Bay the following week before getting Pac-7 play started.
