San Luis Obispo police arrest two men in connection with vehicle thefts

San Luis Obispo police arrested two men Monday who they say were in possession of stolen property.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department says Esteban Mota, 26, and Casey Cerro, 27, both transients, were arrested in connection with two stolen property incidents.

On Monday, police received reports that property had been stolen from a San Luis Obispo City Firefighter's car. The stolen property included several articles of firefighting clothing, department equipment, and accessories.

A few hours after the theft was reported, fire department personnel spotted two men in possession of some of the equipment riding bicycles in the area of Caudill and Victoria. Police searched the area with the help of the fire department, and they were able to track down the two suspects at Goodwill on Industrial Way.

Investigators recovered a large portion of the stolen possessions and arrested the two men for possession of stolen property.

While officers were investigating the crime, a second person reported that tools had been stolen from her car near the Amtrak Train Station. According to police, the suspects seen near the Amtrak area matched the descriptions of Mota and Cerro. Police say Mota and Cerro were found in possession of tools stolen from the car in the Amtrak area.

Mota was charged with two counts of possession of stolen property. Cerro was charged with two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
