The Santa Barbara City Council voted Tuesday to ban single-use plastic shopping bags.
The ban must still be confirmed at a council meeting later this month. It will go into effect in large grocery stores and pharmacies three months after that and at all stores in the city after one year.
A plastic bag ban went into effect in San Luis Obispo County one year ago.
