Two Santa Barbara residents are facing child endangerment charges after their 16-day old baby girl suffered a fractured skull and brain injury.
Santa Barbara police say they were called to Cottage Hospital on November 8 to conduct a child abuse investigation.
Police say the baby's parents, Joshua and Maria Rodriguez, initially claimed the baby was hurt when she accidentally rolled off of her father's lap and fell onto a hardwood floor.
During the investigation, police say they determined that Joshua Rodriguez was under the influence of THC and alcohol and fell asleep with the baby on his lap. Police say he woke up as the baby was falling. They say when Rodriguez tried to stand up, he fell and landed on the baby's head, fracturing her skull.
Police say the incident happened at approximately 7:45 pm on November 7, but Maria Rodriguez did not take the infant to the hospital until 10:00 am the next day.
Both Joshua and Maria Rodriguez were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment under circumstances likely to cause great bodily harm or death.
The child was placed in the custody of Santa Barbara County Child Welfare Services.
