A Santa Barbara man was arrested for attempted extortion and elder abuse.
His girlfriend was also arrested for possession of drugs and child endangerment.
Santa Barbara Police say they started investigating 28 year-old Matthew Rene Brown about a month ago after receiving a report from a 67 year-old Santa Barbara man.
They say Brown attempted to extort $5000 dollars from that man... after falsely claiming he hit him with his car.
Police say it happened on August 1st.
The victim was making a turn in his Mercedes onto 100 W. Mission Street from 1900 Chapala Street.
They say Brown confronted the man and said he would be arrested for a hit and run.
After they exchanged information, the victim told police Brown contacted him and demanded $5000 dollars or he would go to jail for a hit and run.
The victim notified the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Police say no accident ever occurred and during their investigation of Brown, found him to be on probation for stealing $7000 dollars from an elderly woman.
While serving a search warrant in the 1800 block of Bath Street in Santa Barbara on August 30th, police arrested Brown at his home.
They also arrested his 25 year-old girlfriend, Alexis Janelle Flores for possession of heroin and narcotics paraphernalia, being under the influence of heroin, and child endangerment.
Police say their three year-old son was also found in the home and was in close contact to the drugs. He was placed in the custody of Flores' family.
