Santa Barbara police arrested a man for indecent exposure Thursday.
It happened around 11:30 a.m. at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. Police were called out to investigate a report of indecent exposure. When they arrived at the scene, they spoke with the victim, a 55-year-old woman, and several other people who pointed out the suspect, Israel Gomez Lopez, 31, of Santa Barbara.
Lopez was near the pond in the park. Officers approached him and noticed his pants were almost completely unzipped, and he was not wearing any underwear. Police say he had a box of condoms and a cell phone on him.
After investigating the incident, police were able to determine that the victim was sitting on a bench talking on her cell phone. She realized Lopez was nearby when he approached her and stood uncomfortably close to her. According to the victim, he had a strange smile on his face. She noticed his pants were unzipped and he was exposing himself to her. She started screaming, and several other people noticed. Then she called the police.
The victim made a citizen's arrest, which police say was helpful because indecent exposure is a misdemeanor, and police officers didn't witness the incident.
Lopez was taken into custody after the citizen's arrest. He was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail. His bail is set at $2,500.00.
