Santa Barbara native Colin Dunbar will be the first Central or South Coast athlete to compete at the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials this week in Eugene, Oregon.
The 23 year old has qualified for Thursday's hammer throw event. He set a personal-best earlier this month of 226 feet, 10 inches.
The Santa Barbara High graduate enjoyed a banner 2011 that ended with an 11th place finish at the USA Outdoor Championships. He finished second among college athletes in the field that also included professionals.
His senior year at Long Beach State, Dunbar earned Big West Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Year. He became just the second athlete in conference history to earn points in all four throwing events to help LBSU win its third conference title.
