The Santa Barbara Police Department says two people were arrested Wednesday for felony sexual battery and other offenses.
Police say Santa Barbara residents, Edgar Jesus Rojas, 18, and Jose Angel Moran, 19, assaulted a 52-year-old woman from Santa Barbara.
On Wednesday, police received reports that a sexual battery had occurred and that the two suspects were last seen near an apartment complex on the 300 block of South Voluntario Street. Police arrived at the scene and found Rojas and Moran sitting on the stairs at the back of the building. Rojas tried to run away from officers, but they used a taser to subdue him.
Investigators were able to determine the victim had exited a nearby bus stop. According to reports, the two suspects followed her and started harassing her with catcalls. Once they got to the 300 block of South Voluntario Street, they groped her and touched one of her clothed intimate body parts. Police say Moran blocked the victim so she couldn't move, and Rojas made a lewd remark and then tried to grope her again. This time, she resisted, and the suspects stopped when they realized people could see them.
Police say Moran had a screwdriver that he was carrying in case he needed to stab someone. He told police he was carrying it to protect himself form rival gang members. Police say he also had an aerosol paint nozzle, which is commonly used by graffiti vandals.
Moran was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail for sexual battery, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and possession of a vandalism tool.
Rojas was arrested and booked for sexual battery and resisting or delaying an officer.
Both of them have bail amounts of $25,000.
