The 15-year-old who called 911 after a bear came through a Santa Margarita park says he was scared more than he's been in his life.
Nathan Church was hanging around the park with a female friend of his when he says the bear came running toward them.
Nathan is working to become an Eagle Scout and recently returned from a training camp where he was trained on bear behavior, so he was trying to keep his cool and think of what to do next. He says the bear chased them toward a picnick table. They both got on top of it, and say that's when the bear got on it's hind legs, standing about 6 feet tall and was growling at them. He made some noise, waved his arms and dialed 911.
Eventually the bear ran away, the park cleared and animal control arrived. But the bear had ran off. Nathan, his mom Connie, brother Aaron, and Dad David still can't believe what happened, and say they sure wish they knew where the bear was.
