Santa Maria-Bonita school board members have denied a petition to start the Santa Maria Valley Charter School. The charter's organizers vow to continue fighting. Dana Valverde, a teacher at Manzanita Charter in Lompoc, says she has already submitted a petition to the California Department of Education and will go to the Santa Barbara County Office of Education in May.
District Superintendent Phil Alvarado found fault with many aspects of the petition, including the financial plan and the facilities plan.
