Starting next year, every Santa Maria city employee will be taking about a five percent paycut. . .mostly through furlough days.

The city council agreed to implement the mandatory time off program, which takes effect January 15th.

Most employees will take off the 3rd Friday of every month and Veterans Day. Police and fire are just taking a pay cut.

"It affects all full time and part time employees, police officers, firefighters, public works employees, all the way up to the city councilors and the planning commissioners, said Rick Haydon, Assistant City Manager

That's more... than 550 employees. City leaders estimate the plan will save them more than one million dollars in 2010. The last time the city turned to furloughs was 1994.
