A milestone for the Santa Maria Valley as Marian Medical Center breaks ground this morning on the area's first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Once completed, Marian's new state-of-the-art 8-bed NICU will have the capabilities to care for sickest and most vulnerable newborns by offering the highest level of care and technology.

Locally, only Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo and Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara have NICUs.

Marian's is scheduled to open at the end of this year in its existing facility.

Marian's currently building a new hospital, which will then house a 21-bed NICU.

It is scheduled to open in early 2012.
