Santa Maria Police believe alcohol was to blame for a crash that left a man in critical condition.

Police officers say 29-year-old Salomon Sandoval Esparza was driving southbound on the 1500 block of South Depot Street around 6 p.m. Saturday. Officers say Esparza lost control, crossed two lanes of traffic and hit a light pole.

Officers say he was thrown out of the vehicle and suffered major injuries. His truck came to rest inside Minami Park near the corner of Depot Street and Battles Road.

Esparza underwent emergency surgery at Marian Medical Center, before he was airlifted to Cottage Hospital.
