Santa Maria police say driver allegedly involved in fatal hit-and-run was unlicensed

KSBY is learning more about Tuesday night's hit-and-run in Santa Maria that killed a 56 year-old man and his dog.

Investigators aren't releasing the victim's name but the Lompoc Unified School District told KSBY the victim was an employee of the district.

The crash happened around 7 pm on North Blosser Road. Police said the man was walking his dog when both were hit and killed by a car.

Investigators said the driver 19 year-old Alvino Corona of Santa Maria and his 18 year-old wife ran from the scene.

Investigators said both returned to the crash site an hour later. The wife was questioned and released. Corona posted bail Wednesday.

Police told KSBY they are looking at whether the victim was crossing the street at the time he was hit and if speed played a role.

The area where the crash happened has been known, among residents and police, as a place where people drive too fast.

Back in June o f2006, a car going too fast on this stretch of North Blosser, lost control and slammed into a pole killing the passenger.

KSBY learned the driver in Tuesday night's fatal crash was unlicensed. He did have a learner's permit but should not have been driving at the time.

Sergeant Jesus Valle told KSBY the issue of unlicensed drivers is a big problem in the city and that's frustrating for some locals. "We never see these people again. They never pay, you know, we have to cover everything so I think it's pretty bad. It's pretty scary, you know, because you never know who hits you," said Felipe Mendoza of Santa Maria.

Police told KSBY there's a possibility a second car was involved but they are still investigation that lead.

Police believe the type of dog that was killed was a boxer.
