Heavier planes will be able to fly in and out of the Santa Maria Public Airport with the opening of an extended runaway on Wednesday.
The runway also keeps airport officials hopeful Allegiant Airlines will choose to offer flights to Hawaii from there.
"We spoke to Allegiant yesterday and they are doing very well in Fresno and we are in a similar area so I think we will do really well in Santa Maria," said Veroneka Reader, airport's finance manager.
The extended runaway will also allow DC-10's that fire fires to operate out of the airport.
